Video Storytelling and Finding Guidance Along the Way

By Precious Floraday December 5th, 2023

Diving into my recent video project was super interesting, way more than I expected. I thought it’d be easy, but turns out, you really need to pay attention to the details and stick to the plan outlined in the rubric. It was like solving a puzzle where every piece matters. Being someone who likes talking to people, it turned out to be a huge plus. Chatting with folks, understanding their stories, and turning it into a cool video was smooth. It made me realize that making a good video isn’t just about the technical stuff – connecting with people and telling their stories is a big part of it. Now, editing the video was a bit of a challenge. Luckily, my professor came to the rescue. She walked me through the entire process, and it was a significant change. Her help made the tough editing part way easier, and I learned a bunch in the process. Looking back, working on this video taught me that it’s not just about knowing the technical stuff. It’s about how you connect with people and having someone to guide you when things get tricky. The mix of skills, talking to people, and getting help from a mentor turned what seemed hard into something really cool. This experience not only added new skills to my toolbox, but also made me see how outstanding it is to tell stories through videos.

A Courtside Adventure: Navigating the World of Sports Photography

By Precious Floraday

DETROIT– This weekend, I had the exciting opportunity to attend a Wayne State University basketball game armed with a camera, ready to dive into the thrilling world of sports photography. Little did I know, this assignment would be a mix of challenges and exhilarating moments that left me pondering the art of capturing sports in action. Capturing the essence of a basketball game through the lens turned out to be a tricky task. Sports photography, I discovered, is like a fast-paced dance. It’s not just about clicking buttons on a camera but about predicting the players’ moves and being lightning-fast with the camera settings. The game’s rhythm became my guide, and each shot required split-second decision-making. Moving through the crowd and finding the perfect spot for a shot was tougher than I imagined. The players moved at lightning speed, making it hard to keep up. There were moments when I had to choose between capturing the action and adjusting my camera to the changing lights on the court. Technical hiccups and an occasional blocked view added an extra layer of complexity. Despite the challenges, there were moments of pure joy. Capturing a slam dunk, the camaraderie between teammates, and the raw emotions on players’ faces brought immense satisfaction. The crowd’s energy, synchronized cheers, and overall excitement created an immersive experience that went beyond just taking pictures—it felt like being part of the game. Preparing for the assignment involved diving into books and videos about sports photography. Lessons from experienced photographers stressed the need for pre-visualization, understanding the sport, and mastering technical aspects. These lessons echoed in my mind as I tried to apply them in the midst of the basketball game’s chaos. Looking back, this sports assignment was a valuable learning journey. The challenges illuminated the many facets of sports photography, not just about technical skills but also about connecting with the subject. Each snapshot I took told a story—a tale of athleticism, passion, and the spirit of the game. As I continue to learn and practice, I carry with me the lessons from Wayne State University’s courtside. The cheers, the bouncing basketballs, and the frozen moments in my camera have reshaped how I see the world of sports. This adventure into sports photography has sparked a new appreciation for the art, and I’m grateful for the chance to freeze time in the midst of the game.

From financial literacy to leadership training, attendees left with a newfound sense of confidence and purpose. “These sessions have equipped me with practical skills that I can apply in my daily life and in my role as a community leader,” remarked Micah Grant, a dedicated AKA member. The highlight of the weekend was the community outreach activity, where members joined hands to support a local charity. Their collective efforts made a tangible impact, underscoring the sorority’s commitment to service. “Being part of AKA means being part of something bigger than myself,” said Salome Adream, another enthusiastic member. “We come together to uplift those in need, and it’s a privilege to be a part of that. “As Micah and Salome expressed, the essence of Alpha Kappa Alpha lies in its dual commitment to sisterhood and service. Rights of a Photojournalist: Navigating Law and Ethics

By Precious Floraday

The First Amendment

I find solace and inspiration in the words of the First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” https://owenspj.blogspot.com/2011/09/our-first-amendment-rights.html

These 45 words embody the essence of American democracy, and their resonance has echoed through the corridors of history since 1791. One can only imagine the transformative impact if such a document guided nations worldwide, fostering a global commitment to these principles.

The Essence of the First Amendment in Photojournalism

For me, the freedom of the press is a sacred trust. It empowers journalists to scrutinize and report on the activities of the government without fear of persecution. This cherished right stands as a cornerstone of accountability, ensuring transparency in the functioning of our democratic institutions. As a scholastic journalist, I understand the profound implications of the First Amendment on my field of study.

Navigating the Legal Landscape

Understanding where and when I, as a photojournalist, can operate is of crucial significance. A guide that delineates the permissible boundaries becomes indispensable. While seasoned photojournalists may have internalized many of these guidelines through years of experience, the complexities and nuances of the rules governing various locations can be daunting. The distinction between public spaces, where documentation is generally allowed, and private domains, such as malls and school classrooms, where consent or permission is requisite, demands meticulous attention. This knowledge is drawn from the Multimedia Textbook, specifically Chapter 8, spanning pages 337 to 343.

Ethical Imperatives in Photojournalism

For me, ethics is not just a set of rules; it is the compass that guides my professional conduct. It is a commitment to doing what is right even when no one is watching. This encompasses refraining from manipulations, whether in the form of digital alterations or staged shots. It further extends to the composition of unbiased captions, avoiding conflicts of interest, and resisting any form of inducement. Upholding these ethical standards is essential to preserving the credibility and trust that communities place in their chosen news source.

Boundaries Defined by NPPA Code of Ethics

The National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) Code of Ethics sets forth a definitive framework for my conduct as a photojournalist. It establishes a professional benchmark, outlining principles of truth, accuracy, and integrity. Adhering to these guidelines ensures that I remain a guardian of truth, thereby upholding the sanctity of my profession.

The Pitfalls of Unethical Behavior

While the path of ethical journalism might be challenging, straying from it can prove disastrous. Instances of photo manipulation or other ethical breaches can have far-reaching consequences. They not only jeopardize my career but also cast a shadow over the entire profession. Recent events, such as the case of Sacramento Bee photographer Bryan Patrick, serve as poignant reminders of the fragility of journalistic integrity.

In conclusion, the rights and responsibilities of a photojournalist are intertwined with the principles enshrined in the First Amendment. This constitutional bedrock, coupled with ethical imperatives and legal boundaries, forms the scaffolding upon which my profession stands. Navigating this terrain demands vigilance, integrity, and a deep commitment to truth-telling. By upholding these standards, I not only fulfill my role as an informer, but also serve as a guardian of a thriving democracy.

Understanding the Essentials of ISO, Shutter Speed, and f/Stop in Photojournalism

By Precious Floraday

During this assignment, I explored the basic steps of IOS camera methods while understanding ISO shutter speed, and f/stop. These three elements form the foundation of creating a well-exposed and compelling image. Beginning with ISO F/stop which regulates the camera’s sensitivity to light. Starting at ISO 400, I learned to strike a balance while understanding that higher ISO amplifies sensitivity. This is beneficial in low-light conditions but potentially introducing graininess. This insight enhanced my ability to achieve clarity and brightness in varying settings.

Next, I delved into shutter speed, the pulse of a photograph. I realized its profound impact on storytelling. Swift speeds freeze action, preserving moments of vitality. Slower speeds introduce a graceful blur, imparting an ethereal quality. This understanding empowered me to capture the essence of a scene, whether lively or tranquil.

Then a more confusing one came f/stop, or aperture, a pivotal tool in manipulating light. Starting at f/2.8, I uncovered its ability to shape the depth of field. Lower f-stop numbers unveiled a wider aperture, inviting lighter and resulting in a beautifully shallow focus. This technique, I discovered, could isolate subjects with exquisite precision, infusing images with a striking sense of dimension. Conversely, higher f-stop values offered a broader scope, keeping the entirety of the scene in sharp relief.

The true magic unfolded when I learned to arrange ISO, shutter speed, and f/stop in symphony. The baseline of ISO 400, 1/60 shutter speed, and f/2.8 aperture provided a reliable starting point. Yet, as lighting and scenarios morphed, so did my settings. This dynamic interplay became second nature, enabling me to seamlessly adapt to diverse environments and photographic goals.

This instruction block has bestowed upon me a solid framework in photography. No longer is the camera a mere device; it’s a conduit for expression. ISO, shutter speed, and f/stop are not just technicalities; they are the palette from which I paint my visual stories.

With this knowledge I have gained from a simple device, I approach each shot with intention and vision. Every setting adjustment is a deliberate brushstroke, adding depth and emotion to my compositions. The camera now stands as an extension of my creative self, capturing moments in a way that truly reflects my unique perspective.

In mastering these essentials, I have unlocked the gateway to boundless creativity. I eagerly anticipate the moments yet to be frozen in time.

The inside scoop of Reporting and Photojournalism History

By Precious Floraday

WSU Journal

Over the weekend reading “Inside Reporting” and delving into the “History of Photojournalism” article has been eye opening and very engaging. “Inside Reporting” emphasizes the importance of precision and clarity in journalism. The lesson is especially relevant in the context of photojournalism, where pictures must be able to stand on their own while simultaneously supporting the written content. I now have a greater appreciation for how carefully chosen and captioned the photos need to be. The historical journey through photojournalism provided a rich backdrop to understanding the evolution of visual storytelling. It became evident that each era brought its own technological advancements and artistic approaches. This historical perspective informs my approach to utilizing digital tools and techniques in capturing and presenting images effectively.

Photojournalism has also changed significantly due to the rapid development of digital technologies and social media platforms. The readings highlighted the significance of flexibility and competence in various digital mediums. Effective visual storytelling now includes knowing how to take advantage of networks like Instagram, Twitter, and multimedia formats. Finally, the call for non-sexist language in assignments is a crucial reminder of the inclusive nature that photojournalism should embody. It reinforces the need for sensitivity and respect in every aspect of visual storytelling, from the subjects we choose to photograph to the way we present them to the world.

To put it simply, these texts have given me a firm basis for navigating the world of digital photojournalism. They have emphasized the value of accuracy, tool adaptability, and a broad perspective. I am eager to put these insights to use in my digital photojournalism class, where I hope to improve my visual storytelling abilities.
